Introduction
If you are on my early TikTok, YouTube or IG you may have noticed that we have another husky.
She no longer gets in many videos, but she is still with us.
Disney is 13. She is the husky that started it all.
She spends most of her day napping.
Her fur is a lot more grey these days.
She doesn’t hear as well as she did either.
But every day she is still gracing us with her presence we hold dear. Anyone who has loved an aging dog knows exactly what I mean.
The thing is, 13 years ago, she was a puppy in my lap on her way to Texas from Georgia. Little did she know what she would start.
Bringing Disney Home

When we bought this house 13 years ago my husband wanted to fill it with dogs. We had 2 dogs and 2 cats. He agreed to take us to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween if we could stop in Georgia for a third dog.
We had had Samoyeds and I love them. So we were looking for another snow dog.
In case you are wondering at that time we had a puppy that just was, named Mac and an American Eskimo, Chili. Both have crossed the rainbow bridge now, but those would be the puppies that welcomed Disney home.
Now since we were on a trip to Disney we knew her name before we even saw her.
We went to the flea market in Savannah and saw a breeder who had huskies. Though she didn’t have a female with her, she had one she would be bringing the next day.
We went back to where we were spending the night and did some research. We knew she was chocolate colored. The next day we saw her and fell in love.
Looking at her now, it is hard to believe that tiny puppy would someday become the queen of our household.
The Husky Years
Here are a few things we learned raising a husky.
They shed, a lot.
She is crafty. She ate a remote control and found a way that made it look like one of her brothers had done it.
They only bark if something is really wrong, but howls when a fire truck passes.
Did I mention the amount of shedding?
She put most everything in her mouth, to include my daughter’s glasses.
Did I mention the shedding?
We have gone through 3 Dysons in 13 years, and are considering a new one.
She is very picky. While she was younger we would find her with her head on her food bowl sleeping. And you best get the treats that she deem passable, or she will leave it on the floor for one of the others to scavenge.
How Disney Changed Our Family
Even though she had 2 older brothers, she knew from the moment her paws hit the floor of this house she was the one in charge.
Even 7 years later when we brought Walter home, she put him in his place.
She definitely has a personality. Even our neighbors know her personality.
I have been told that if they hear one of the other dogs bark, they don’t do anything, but if they hear her bark they go to see what is going on.
The Dog That Started It All
Because of Disney, when a friend’s neighbors had a litter of huskies, we brought Walter home.
We love huskies, so when we saw someone had a husky that was tied up in their backyard, because they were just so much work, we brought Aurora home.
Disney started this husky household. Every husky adventure, every fur-covered piece of furniture, and every bit of chaos that came after can be traced back to one little chocolate-colored puppy.
These Days
These days she naps a lot.
We don’t see her chasing squirrels through the backyard anymore. Though I am sure Walter will tell you she tells him how to do it.
Her hearing is not what it used to be. She isn’t ignoring me when I call her to come in. Often I have to go and get her, because she doesn’t hear me.
Sometimes it is easy to focus on what she can’t do anymore. Then she trots into the kitchen looking for a treat or decides Walter needs correcting, and I am reminded she is still very much Disney.
She still plays with Aurora and Walter, when the mood strikes her. I saw her chasing Aurora just a few days ago.
OK, so that may have been because Aurora was being annoying.
Her fur is a lot more grey than it used to be.
Final Thoughts
We never get enough time with our beloved pets.
I have read a husky’s life span can be anywhere from 8 to 12 years. Some even say 15. So we feel blessed for every day we get with her.
Most days she follows me from room to room. When Dad is home she is found in a chair close to him or curled up sleeping at his feet.
Disney may not run around like she used to, but she’ll always be the husky that started it all.
Every Walter story, every Aurora adventure, and every husky memory we share today started with one chocolate-colored husky named Disney.
