Let’s have an honest conversation about what I really wish someone had told me before I showed up at Walt Disney World for my very first runDisney race.
A 10K… I think 😅
At the time of registration, adrenaline was in full swing. I just wanted in. I didn’t get the challenge, but I did manage to grab two single races.
Then that confirmation email hit my inbox…
And reality hit right along with it.
What did I just do?
Who do I think I am?
Why am I acting like I’m still 20-something?
Cue the panic.
I had to talk myself down real quick. I knew I had time to train… but did I really?
Why runDisney Over 50 Is More Common Than You Think
Now that I’ve got a few runDisney races under my belt, let me reassure you of something:
You are NOT alone.
Yes, there are plenty of younger runners—but there are also a lot of us over 50 out there holding our own. I’ve even seen runners in their 80s and 90s (and honestly, that’s my goal now).
With races often hosting 20,000+ participants, the odds are very much in your favor—you will find your people.
The Biggest Fears (And the Truth)
Let’s talk about those thoughts that creep in during training… and sometimes mid-race.
- I’m too slow
- I’m not in shape
- I’ll be the oldest one there
Here’s the truth:
runDisney is one of the most supportive race environments you will ever experience. The energy, the cast members, the crowds—it’s unlike anything else.
Yes, people will pass you.
But guess what? You’ll pass people too.
And as long as you stay ahead of the balloon ladies (16-minute mile pace), you’re good.
And even if you don’t?
You still showed up. You started. That alone puts you ahead of so many people who never even try.
Not in shape? That’s what training is for.
Start early. Go at your pace. Find your rhythm.
And being the oldest one out there?
Honestly… what a story that would make at the finish line.
What runDisney Is REALLY Like
runDisney isn’t just a race—it’s an experience.
Where else can you:
- Run through the parks
- Take photos with rare characters
- Pass by cheering crowds, bands, and DJs
- Get “pixie dusted” near the finish line
Walking is absolutely allowed—and encouraged.
In fact, the run/walk method (thanks to Jeff Galloway) is what many runners use successfully.
If you can maintain that 16-minute mile pace—even walking—you can finish.
My Personal Experience Running runDisney Over 50
I’ll be honest… I’m completely spoiled by runDisney.
I’ve run two half marathons, and both times I questioned myself during training.
Do I even like running?
Or do I just like the medals?
Race morning nerves? Still very real. I don’t sleep. Ever.
But the moments I’ll never forget?
Running through EPCOT’s World Showcase
Running down Main Street, U.S.A.
And yes… running through Cinderella Castle
I tear up every single time.
And that finish line?
Nothing compares.
It doesn’t matter your pace. It doesn’t matter your age.
You did it.
How to Start Training (Simple Plan)
The most important thing?
Just start.
Don’t overthink it.
If you’re starting with a 5K, I’ve got a simple beginner plan → Beginner 5KTraining plan for Women over 50, Realistic and doable
You can also check out the official training resources on runDisney—they offer great guidance, especially around the run/walk method.
A few basics:
- Train 3–4 days a week
- Don’t skip rest days
- Add light strength training (yes, it matters!)
- Focus on hydration (Florida heat is no joke)
You don’t have to run the whole race.
Walking is part of the strategy.
Tips for Your First runDisney Race
Race weekend comes fast—here’s what helps:
- Arrive early for the expo
- Keep your bib pass + ID handy
- Try on your race shirt (you can exchange sizes)
- Visit vendors—but don’t overwhelm yourself
- If you want Disney merch, consider going early
Hydrate. Eat well. Try to sleep (good luck with that part 😅)
Race morning:
- Get there earlier than you think
- Enjoy the pre-race energy
- Take photos, soak it all in
And most importantly…
Enjoy every second.
Final Answer: Are You Too Old for runDisney?
Absolutely not.
You are not too old.
You are not too late.
And you are more capable than you think.
runDisney is for every age—and honestly?
There is something extra special about doing this over 50.
