What to pack for runDisney for Women Over 50 What Actually Matters

I have a tendency to pack everything for a runDisney weekend. And I do mean everything.

I usually drive to Florida because I spend time with family and do a little extra traveling while I’m there, so it’s easier for me. My goddaughter usually flies down, though, so I’m very aware of what fits in a suitcase and what probably needs to stay home.

So this packing list is meant to be practical. I’m focusing on what you really need if you’re flying, plus a few extras you may want to pack, have delivered to your resort, or grab once you get there.

Because here’s the truth: you do not need to pack everything you own for a runDisney weekend.

But there are a few things you absolutely do need, and some of them are the little comfort items other packing lists never mention. That may be an over-50 thing. I don’t know. But let’s talk about what actually matters.

Race Day Outfit: Nothing New, Nothing Risky

There are some really cute outfits out there, especially for the 5K. People go all out, and I love seeing them.

But for the longer races, I am much happier in tried-and-true running shorts and a moisture-wicking top.

Now, if you do want to dress up for the 5K or even the 10K, I do have one piece of advice:

Do a practice run.

Yes, even in your costume.

You do not want a wardrobe malfunction during a race, whether it’s a 5K or a marathon. Test the outfit. Work out any rubbing, shifting, or “what was I thinking?” moments before race weekend.

To be honest, my goddaughter usually picks our race outfits. She finds cute shirts on Etsy, then adds ears or hair clips. I get a little glitter. We look cute, but we are also comfortable, and that matters more than anything.

What you do want to pack:

  • Moisture-wicking tops and bottoms
  • A good sports bra you already know works
  • Socks you have trained in
  • Extra layers for the corrals
  • A throwaway jacket if the morning is chilly

And let me just say this: comfort wins every single time. Yes, I want to be cute. But I would much rather finish feeling comfortable.

Shoes Matter More Than Almost Anything

Your feet are about to make contact with a whole lot of pavement.

I’m not going to recommend a specific shoe brand, because different feet like different shoes, and how you run matters too. That is something to figure out during training.

What I will recommend is this: bring shoes you have already run in.

I cannot stress that enough.

Shoes can feel great in the store and totally different a few miles later. Race weekend is not the time to experiment.

I also strongly recommend bringing:

  • Two pairs of broken-in running shoes if you’re doing more than one race
  • A backup pair even if you are only doing one event
  • Comfortable walking shoes for the Expo and park days

If your first pair gets wet, starts rubbing, or just isn’t feeling right, you’ll be glad you packed a second option.

Recovery Items You Will Be Glad You Packed

People do not talk enough about recovery. Trust me, it matters.

When we get over that half-century mark, “just push through it” is not nearly as fun as it used to be. A few comfort and recovery items can make race weekend so much more enjoyable.

Here’s what I would pack:

  • KT blister tape
  • Compression socks that go up to your knees
  • Pain meds like Tylenol or Motrin, whatever you normally use
  • Foam roller or massage tool
  • Protein snacks
  • Electrolytes
  • Epsom salts
  • Recovery shoes

I love my Oofos, but flip-flops or any easy recovery shoe can work too.

Race Weekend Must-Haves for the Expo

You will need a few basics for the Expo besides comfy shoes and patience.

If you go on day one, expect lines. And if you are doing the 5K, you do need to go that first day.

Here’s what to bring:

  • The email runDisney sent so you can get your bib
  • A valid photo ID
  • Your phone
  • Portable charger
  • Credit card or cash
  • Water bottle and/or electrolytes

I usually add the race email to my digital wallet, which makes things easier.

Resort Room Essentials That Make Life Easier

Let’s talk about the things that make your resort room feel a little more comfortable.

This is where you’ll sleep before race morning and recover after the race, so pack the things that help you rest and relax.

My list:

  • Comfortable pajamas or loungewear
  • Heating pad if you use one
  • Extra snacks
  • Coffee or tea setup if you need it
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Safety pins or bib magnets
  • Chargers
  • Sunscreen
  • Toiletries you actually use
  • Eye mask or sleep mask

Those little comfort items matter more than people think.

Don’t Forget These Early-Morning Race Items

These are the things I keep together in one place with my race outfit. I even pack them in a separate bag with my shoes so I’m not scrambling at 2:00 AM.

Pack these together:

  • Throwaway layer for waiting in the corrals
  • Hat or gloves if needed
  • Breakfast you know works
  • Hydration
  • Bib
  • Pins or bib clips
  • Running belt
  • Mylar blanket

Race mornings are ridiculously early. The less you have to think, the better.

Park Day and Post-Race Comfort Items

Before you know it, it’s Medal Monday and time to hit the parks with your shiny new bling.

But even if you aren’t racing that day, Disney still means a lot of walking. And your feet and legs may need a little pampering.

Pack:

  • Comfy walking shoes
  • Lightweight change of clothes
  • Crossbody bag
  • Cooling towel or fan if it’s warm
  • Compression leggings or easy clothes for later
  • Blister pads

What I Would Skip

There are always a few things I bring and never touch.

So here’s what I would skip:

  • Too many outfit choices
  • Any gear you have not trained in or broken in
  • Too many extra clothes
  • Cosmetics or hair products you don’t even use at home
  • Anything uncomfortable just because it looks cute

I am very guilty of overpacking clothes, so I’m saying this to myself too.

My Real runDisney Packing Philosophy Over 50

I’ve done enough Disney trips and runDisney weekends to finally have a packing theory:

  • Pack lighter
  • Prioritize comfort and recovery
  • Make race mornings as easy as possible
  • If you truly forget something important, you can probably get it in Orlando

Comfort is not being lazy.

Comfort is part of getting yourself to the finish line.

Conclusion

Don’t overcomplicate packing. You are going to Florida, not the moon.

If you truly need something, there is a very good chance you can find it in Orlando, at your resort, or even at the Expo if it’s race-related.

As soon as my goddaughter and I get registered for a race, we start a shared note on our phones. As we think of things we want for race weekend, we add them to the note. It helps us plan outfits, stay organized, and avoid forgetting something important.

I’d love to hear from you. What is the one item you always make sure to pack for runDisney?
